Fion Wine Pub Austin

A Bite Out

Fion Wine Pub is a destination hangout on the western outskirts of Austin. If you’re looking for a tasty, playful, and thoughtful glass of wine or beer, as well as killer pub grub, she has you covered. Fion has been doing its thing for a few years now and has matured into a secret haven for wine, beer, cigar, and great chow lovers.

Although, I’ve never bought a wine bottle to take home with me, I can say that the by-the-glass program (with over 60 wines by-the-glass) is the place to be. On a recent visit, I had the ’06 Esporao Alentejo Red Reserva (Portugal) and the ’07 Abacela Tempranillo (South Oregon). Both came recommended by Josh McKay (the owner and gracious host) and were unmitigated and unusual choices. I woke up the next morning dreaming about the Esporao. It rocked! With 19 wine flights, there is something for everyone. The retail set appears to be fairly heavy with California, some Australian, and a little Argentina, though there are some French, Italian, and Spanish, too. By the bottle pricing is basically retail, not your typical winebar at 2 to 3 times retail…

Beer lovers can create their own 6-pack, choosing from about 280 different beers, for only $8.95! Happy Hour beer flights of 4 are available for $5 (regularly $6, which is still a great price)every day, from 4 to 7! $3 pint Mondays should make you smile and if you’re craving a beat off Main Street, there are 8 Guinness specialty drinks on the menu, too.

If fish and chips is your thing, they have a pretty fun one here, with a screaming thick piece of cod and great fries that Uncle Buck would be excited to eat. The garlic hummus, served with naan bread and panko-fried olives is another favorite. It’s a nice contrast to my other local fried olive favorite (with anchovy-stuffed olives at another 4-lettered F word venue). The Fion Sandwiches (like the Grilled Tomato, Pepper, and Eggplant Sandwich) and burgers (like the straight-laced Fion Patty Melt) are the cat’s pajamas (great portioned, quite filling, and definitely values), but the main courses will treat you like a Cowboy King. The 16 oz., 4-inch thick, Cast Iron Skillet Seared Beef tenderloin with sautéed spinach and oven-roasted Yukon Gold Potato Hash is King here and most any regular will brag about it. Chef Paul Petruzzi is doing some great things! The bistro at the Steiner Ranch location is worth the trek from anywhere in Austin.

Fion has two locations, the original at Steiner Ranch (with 500 wines, 500 beers, of which 15 beers on tap) and  and the one-year old little brother on Bee Caves Road, near 71 (with 700 wines, 700 beers, of which 46 are on tap).

All in all, folks near Steiner Ranch and Bee Cave should count their blessings that they have a place to stop by, hang their hat, have a great glass of wine or beer, and feel at home.
